AI in Supportive Care: Current and Future Directions

Wednesday, April 29, 12 to 1 p.m. ET, on Zoom

      Featuring:

Dr. John-José Nuñez is the Associate Medical Director of Supportive Care at BC Cancer and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia. A dual-trained cancer psychiatrist and computer scientist, his research uses artificial intelligence to improve outcomes for patients facing both cancer and mental illness or other supportive care needs. His work, published in leading journals and featured in international media, ranges from predicting cancer survival to identifying patients in need of counselling or psychiatric care, bridging the gap between data science and supportive cancer care.

Dr. Srinivas Raman is a staff radiation oncologist at BC Cancer Vancouver and a clinical associate professor in the division of radiation oncology, University of British Columbia. He currently serves as the chair for the BC Cancer lung tumour group. He is dual certified in clinical informatics, and his research interests are centred in applications of artificial intelligence to automate radiotherapy workflows and improve patient care. In this webinar, he will be speaking on Large Language Models as Patient-Facing Tools in Cancer Care.

Friday, May 8, 12 to 1 p.m. EDT, on Zoom

Over the last five years, the Anew Research Collaborative at Royal Roads University has been working together with AYAs and care allies to understand their distinct experiences and needs and co-design tangible changes in AYA cancer care and support.

      In this workshop, we will:

      2. Explore some essential guideposts when engaging in Participatory Action Research,
      3. Engage in interactive activities to explore Participatory Action Research in practice.

Come explore with us how you might apply Participatory Action Research principles and practices in your psychosocial oncology research and practice.

      Featuring:

Dr. Cheryl Heykoop (she/her), Associate Professor, Royal Roads University

Dr. Heykoop is a Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies at Royal Roads University. As we stand at a new horizon in psychosocial oncology, we recognize the unprecedented opportunities to expand both access to and impact of comprehensive cancer care. This conference will explore innovative strategies for breaking down traditional barriers that have historically limited access to psychosocial support, including geographic isolation, resource constraints, cultural disparities, and systemic inequities in healthcare delivery.

This expansion of reach and influence represents not merely growth in service numbers, but a fundamental transformation in how we conceptualize, design, and implement patient-centered psychosocial care across diverse communities and care settings. We will explore scalable solutions that amplify impact while maintaining the deeply personal, human-centered approach that defines excellence in psychosocial oncology. From telehealth innovations and peer support networks to community-based interventions and integrated care models, this conference will showcase evidence-based strategies that expand our collective ability to support individuals and families navigating the cancer journey, wherever they may be.

The CAPO 2026 conference will run from June 8 to 9, in person at the Sheraton Hotel, Newfoundland
