Call for Award Submissions – Nomination Deadline for ALL
awards is February 24, 2012


Life Time Achievement Award

This annual award honours a CAPO/ACOP member who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee and the Board of Directors of the association, has made exceptional and enduring career contributions to psychosocial oncology. Prior to 2010, this award was called the CAPO Award of Excellence.


CAPO Award for Research Excellence

This award shall be made to recognize an individual who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee and the Board of Directors of the association, has made a significant research contribution to psychosocial oncology.

CAPO Award for Clinical Excellence

This award shall be presented by the Awards Committee and the Board of
Directors of the association to an individual in recognition of outstanding clinical contributions to the field of psychosocial oncology in Canada.


CAPO Award of Education Excellence

This award shall be made to recognize individuals who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee and the Board of Directors of the association, have made a significant contribution to education and training in psychosocial oncology in Canada.

CAPO Conference Student Travel Award

This annual award has been developed to honour a CAPO student member who has demonstrated excellence in his/her submission of an original paper.

CAPO 2012 Conference Update


We would like to thank all members who submitted abstracts for the 2012 conference. Approximately 200 abstracts were received. Abstracts are now being reviewed. Acceptance notifications will be sent at the end of January.

The Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO) is being held in Vancouver, British Columbia, April 25 – 28, 2012.  The conference theme is Shifting Paradigms: New Directions in Psychosocial Oncology across the cancer trajectory – prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, post-treatment, palliative care.

Registration will open next week.

IPODE Course Schedule


The IPODE program is pleased to announce the launch of their Sex Counseling in Cancer – Part 2 course this fall.

The IPODE project addresses education gaps in psychosocial oncology through the development of interprofessional, web-based courses. These courses are offered as graduate level electives through partner universities and as continuing education (CE) options.

Attention IPOS Congress Attendees


The IPOS 13th World Congress of Psycho-Oncology and Psychosocial Academy is being held 16–20 October 2011 in Antalya, Turkey. If you are attending and have not yet booked hotel accommodation – we have a CAPO member who has made a hotel reservation and unfortunately is unable to attend. The hotel has a no cancellation policy, so she is searching for someone to take over her reservation. If you are able to assist please contact Marg Fitch at marg.fitch@sunnybrook.ca.

Survivorship Guideline Now Available

The Pan-Canadian Guidance on Organization and Structure of Survivorship Services and Psychosocial-Supportive Care Best Practices for Adult Cancer Survivors document is now available on the CAPO website.

This guidelines was developed through a collaborative partnership between the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and CAPO. CAPO is the steward of this guideline.

CAPO is also the steward of the Pan-Canadian Practice Guideline: Screening, Assessment and Care of Psychosocial Distress (Depression, Anxiety) in Adults with Cancer and the Pan-Canadian Clinical Practice Guideline: Assessment of the Psychosocial Needs of the Adult Cancer Patient.

The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation is committed to increasing cancer survivorship in Eastern Ontario and is the only local charitable organization dedicated exclusively to cancer. Working to fill the gaps in services for cancer patients, the Cancer Foundation has partnered with local hospitals and service providers to ensure residents have the best possible care close to home, shorter wait times, access to the latest research and new therapies and overall improved quality of life – which includes Canada’s first Centre for Cancer Survivorship. The Maplesoft offers individual and group coaching with the objective of empowering survivors to be active participants in their health and wellbeing.

Professional cancer coaches empower people be active participants in their health and wellbeing. Cancer coaching creates a powerful and effective framework which uses the Member’s experience and unique needs as the starting point for providing guidance to enhance quality of life and re-gain a sense of control.

The candidate will be responsible for assessing Members on a case by case basis to ensure their needs and goals are met. This will include; developing customized care/action plans, providing navigation throughout the Member’s cancer journey and effectively coach and graduate Members from care to community services providing referrals as necessary.

The candidate will be required to draw on his or her experience as a health care provider and in depth knowledge of cancer care in Eastern Ontario to ensure Member needs, interests and concerns are addressed.

Oncology/Palliative Care – 24 month Limited-Term Lecturer or Assistant Professor

Date of Submission: July 13, 2011

The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Windsor welcomes applications for a two-year limited-term position at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor in the area of Oncology/Palliative Care commencing as early as September 1, 2011.

Successful candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Nursing and have advanced practice experience in Oncology/Palliative Care. Candidates who have a PhD in Nursing are preferred.  Those with a PhD in Nursing or equivalent will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor.  Candidates must be registered or eligible for registrationwith the College of Nurses of Ontario. Special consideration will be given to applicants who have practiced as an APN in an Oncology/Palliative care setting (either as a CNS, NP or RN-EC).

This position encompasses primarily teaching, administration and development of curriculum in oncology/palliative care at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University of Windsor, Faculty of Nursing is preparing to offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Practice Oncology/Palliative Care Nursing that will utilize eLearning and be delivered in a flexible delivery format, including both face-to-face and on-line. Expertise in related research, and/or continuing education development is considered an asset. Knowledge of the nursing profession (e.g., Regulatory bodies, professional associations) is required.

The successful candidate will be an individual who has working

knowledge of:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the APN in Oncology/Palliative care
  • Functions/Programs of the de Souza Institute
  • Cancer Care Ontario System
  • Hospice Association of Ontario
  • The Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO)
  • Various computer programs – e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Knowledge of Elluminate would be an asset.
